My First Ghost Hunt at the Walker-Ames Mansion in Port Gamble, WA: Did I Survive? 👻🏚️

Kitsap County is known for many things—stunning waterfront homes, charming small towns, and breathtaking PNW views. But did you know it’s also home to one of the most haunted mansions in Washington? Well, I found out the fun way (if you consider possibly being haunted fun).

I recently braved my first-ever ghost hunt at the Walker-Ames Mansion in Port Gamble, WA, and let’s just say…it was an experience. Was it terrifying? A little. Did I make it out unscathed? Debatable. Would I do it again? Absolutely.

Join me as I recount one of the most bizarre and thrilling nights of my life, and check out the full video of my adventure here. But be warned—this house has a way of making its presence known.

Port Gamble: A Charming Town With a Haunted Twist 🌲🏡👀

For those unfamiliar with Port Gamble, let me set the scene. This historic little town is nestled in Kitsap County, Washington, about 25 minutes from Bremerton, 35 minutes from Gig Harbor, and just a scenic ferry ride plus a short drive from Seattle.

It’s a quaint, picturesque waterfront town that looks like it belongs on a postcard—until the sun goes down. That’s when the real fun begins.

Port Gamble is home to one of the most haunted locations in the Pacific Northwest—the Walker-Ames Mansion. This beautiful, yet slightly ominous Victorian home has stood tall since the late 1800s, with a history as layered as the peeling wallpaper inside.

After being abandoned for years, this grand ol’ house was left to the elements and whatever spirits decided to stick around. Now, it’s part of Port Gamble’s paranormal tours, inviting the bravest souls (aka people like me who should know better) to investigate the supernatural.

The Night of the Hunt: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night… Literally 🌪️💀

The night of the ghost hunt? Oh, just one of the stormiest nights imaginable. Because if you’re going to tempt the supernatural, why not add in some howling wind, rattling windows, and rain pelting the mansion like a scene straight out of a horror movie?

I met up with my friends Taylor and Tracy in front of the Walker-Ames Mansion, ready (or as ready as I could be) to step into one of Kitsap County’s most notorious haunted locations.

The group was split into two, and we started our journey in the attic. Because where better to start a ghost hunt than the most unsettling part of an already haunted house?

The Attic: Where Things Got… Weird 🤯👻

As soon as I walked up those attic stairs, I felt it. An overwhelming heaviness pressed down on my body—like an invisible weighted blanket I did NOT sign up for. And guess what? My friend Taylor felt the exact same thing—without either of us saying anything.

That’s when I knew something (or someone?) was up there with us.

Then came the dizziness. It felt like I had suddenly stepped onto a boat in the middle of a choppy sea. My balance was off, my head felt foggy, and I was very aware that something unseen might be watching us.

And then, the name Frank was mentioned.

We don’t know who Frank is (or was), but what we do know is that he was VERY active on our devices. Every time his name came up, the energy spiked, and our equipment started lighting up like a Christmas tree.

Was Frank a former resident? A friendly ghost? A trickster spirit? A bored entity just messing with us? No idea. But what I do know is that Frank made his presence known again and again while we were in the attic.

The Basement: Surprisingly… Not Terrifying? 😳🔦

After our heavy, eerie, and slightly nauseating attic experience, we headed down to the basement. If Hollywood horror movies have taught me anything, it’s that basements are where things go terribly wrong.

Except… this one actually felt kind of light? Like, if the attic had an oppressive “GET OUT” energy, the basement was more like “Hey, welcome to my man cave.”

There wasn’t a whole lot of activity down there, at least not for me or my group. Was Frank not a basement guy? Did the ghosts just clock out for their break? Not sure. But I wasn’t about to go looking for trouble.

Would I Do It Again? ✅ Absolutely.

Despite the weird physical sensations, the eerie activity in the attic, and Frank’s very opinionated presence, this was hands-down one of the most fascinating and unforgettable experiences I’ve ever had.

Port Gamble is not just a charming waterfront town—it’s a place where history, hauntings, and a little bit of real estate curiosity collide. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the Walker-Ames Mansion is a must-visit for anyone living in or visiting Kitsap County.
