Scare Away Hunger: How You Can Make a Difference This October

As the crisp autumn air rolls in and pumpkin-spiced everything takes over our lives, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of Halloween, cozy sweaters, and all things fall. But this season, Dallas and I invite you to join us in something a little more meaningful—something that will bring warmth and nourishment to families in our community. Welcome to our “Scare Away Hunger” food drive, running throughout the entire month of October, in support of the Central Kitsap Food Bank!

We’ve all heard that it’s better to give than to receive, and in the spirit of this motto, we’re ready to make this food drive our best one yet. Read on to learn how you can help us make a real impact this October.

🎃 The Inspiration Behind "Scare Away Hunger”

The idea for our “Scare Away Hunger” food drive came from a simple realization: hunger doesn’t take a holiday. As we prepare to indulge in treats and festive meals this season, many families in our community face the harsh reality of food insecurity. According to Feeding America, millions of households struggle to put food on the table every day, and these numbers are even more pressing during the colder months.

That’s why we decided to roll up our sleeves and do something about it. With the support of our wonderful clients, friends, and neighbors, we’re hoping to make a significant difference for those in need this October. And we’re inviting YOU to join us!

📅 The Details: How It Works

Here's how our "Scare Away Hunger" food drive works:

- Date: The food drive will be running the entire month of October.

- Bags Drop-Off: Dallas and I will be randomly selecting 25 of our fantastic clients to receive a special delivery. On October 7th, we’ll be dropping off a donation bag at your doorstep.

- Pick-Up Day: Fill up the bag with your generous contributions, and we’ll be back to collect it on October 24th. It’s that simple!

We’ve made this process as easy as possible because we understand that life gets busy. But even the smallest contribution can make a world of difference for families facing hunger this season.

🧡 Why Your Contribution Matters

You might be wondering, "Why does this matter? Will my small contribution really make a difference?" The answer is a resounding YES! Every item you donate will go directly to families and individuals in our community who are struggling to make ends meet. Your donation could mean the difference between someone having a warm meal or going to bed hungry.

Did you know that food banks often struggle to keep their shelves stocked, especially as the holiday season approaches? By participating in this food drive, you’ll be helping ensure that those in need have access to nutritious food, personal care items, and a bit of joy during this season of giving.

🏡 About the Central Kitsap Food Bank

The Central Kitsap Food Bank has been serving our community since 1989, and they’ve made it their mission to provide nutritious food to those in need, no matter the circumstances. They rely on donations from individuals, organizations, and local businesses to keep their shelves stocked. By participating in our “Scare Away Hunger” food drive, you’re supporting their incredible work and ensuring that they can continue to provide for families in Kitsap County.

💡 Helpful Tips for Donating

We want to make sure your contributions are as impactful as possible, so here are a few helpful tips when selecting items to donate:

- Check Expiration Dates: Please ensure that all items are within their expiration dates. Expired items cannot be distributed and will have to be discarded.

- Opt for Canned & Boxed Goods: These items have a longer shelf life and are easier for food banks to store and distribute.

- Consider Nutritional Value: While treats are always fun, donating items with high nutritional value can help families stay healthy.

- Think About Variety: Consider donating items that cater to different dietary needs, such as gluten-free, low-sodium, or sugar-free options.

🌟 Why We’re Grateful for Your Support

At the end of the day, this food drive is about more than just collecting cans—it's about showing up for one another. We are incredibly grateful for every single one of you who chooses to participate in “Scare Away Hunger.” Your generosity not only provides food to those who need it but also sends a powerful message that our community cares and supports one another.

🎃 Let’s Scare Away Hunger Together!

If you’re one of the 25 clients receiving a bag from us, we want to thank you in advance for your contribution. But even if you’re not on the list, you can still participate by dropping off your donations at any of the John L. Scott locations in Silverdale, Poulsbo, or Port Orchard/Gig Harbor.

Let’s make this October one to remember. Together, we can “Scare Away Hunger” and ensure that no family goes without the nourishment they deserve.
